Rather than using battery backed memory, forever paks use modern, advanced, nonvolatile memory. The memory chips are not battery backed, allowing it to last indefinitely.

While new batteries can be soldered in, lost save files cannot be recovered, and the pak will eventually run out of battery and cease to function again. Original, official N64 controller paks store their save files on battery-backed SRAM chips. These volatile chips only store data when they are supplied power, which is supplied by the battery. But once the battery dies, so does your data stored on the chip it was powering. This means every controller pak, along with the data on them, is on a ticking timer.
